Children’s Art Competition 2025

Celebrating Memory, Care and Community through Art

Life & Time is delighted to launch our 2025 Children’s Art Competition, marking Palliative Care Week. This competition gives primary and post-primary pupils the chance to express themselves creatively and reflect on what care, compassion, and memory mean to them.

Winning entries will be featured in the Life & Time 2026 Calendar, with prizes and calendar production generously sponsored by John MacMahon & Co – Chartered Accountants and Auditors.

🎨 Scenarios / Themes

Children can choose one of three scenarios for their artwork:

  • Scenario 1 – Favourite Memory / Grief

Draw a favourite memory of someone who has died: a shared activity (baking, farming, fishing, fixing things), or a special place that reminds you of them.

(If a child has not experienced loss, they may draw a pet, or choose another scenario.)

  • Scenario 2 – Care in Your Community

Care can be found everywhere – in the kindness of a friend, the warmth of family, the love for a pet, or the beauty of the world around us. The Life & Time team of nurses and doctors also provide care at night-time in people’s homes.

Draw a picture that shows what caring looks like to you.

  • Scenario 3 – What Palliative Care Means to You

Palliative care is support that improves quality of life for people with life-limiting illness. It may come from doctors and nurses, but also from family, friends, or even pets. Create a drawing of what you think palliative care is, or what life should be like when someone is well cared for.

⚠️ Note for Teachers & Parents

We recognise that themes of grief and loss can be sensitive. Participation in any scenario is optional, and it is up to teachers or parents to decide which theme is most appropriate. All entries will be judged equally, no matter which theme is chosen.

David McGowan, Star of Netflix’s Award-Winning Documentary The Funeral Director, to Speak at Life & Time Event in Warrenpoint

Join ‘Ireland’s Most Famous Undertaker’ and renowned speaker as he shares insights, humorous and poignant stories from his long career in the funeral industry at next month’s Life & Time event in the Whistledown Hotel.

To mark six years supporting the local community, providing End of Life Care at home, the charity Life & Time Care is hosting a unique event with David McGowan – Ireland’s best known funeral director and subject of the Award-Winning Netflix Documentary, ‘The Funeral Director’.

The event, ‘An Evening with David McGowan’, takes place in the Whistledown Hotel on 22nd March and is free to attend (booking is required).

David McGowan, is hailed as ‘Ireland’s best known Funeral Director’ following the success of the Award-winning Netflix documentary and has recently published A Life Among the Dead: Stories from an Irish Funeral Director.

Launched in March 2019, Life & Time Care provides end of life care and support to patients who wish to die at home. The Charity and registered nursing agency provide an ‘on-call’ nursing service to local communities across South Down, 365 days a year, between 10pm and 8am. To date, the charity has facilitated 846 home visits and provided over 2792 nights of care.

David is a highly engaging and sought-after speaker, appearing on The Tommy Tiernan show; regularly contributing to RTE news and current affairs shows including The Clare Byrne Show.

Martin McGinn, Service Design & Operations Manager, Life & Time Care said that David was a fitting guest for this special event, “given his unique insight into death and grief during his long career.”

“As a charity, we would encourage people to have conversations about their death and their own wishes. This aspect of ‘Advance Care Planning’ is something we encourage in our own work and David’s personal mission aligns to ours – to open conversations and encourage people to have an understanding of their loved ones wishes as well as their own.

“He is a charismatic speaker – poignant, often humorous and educational. He talks from the point of view of someone who has spent his life working in service of the dead and we are delighted to have secured him for this special event.”

‘An Evening with David McGowan’, is designed to appeal to anyone with an interest in palliative care, those working in the medical and nursing sector, funeral undertakers and local people who are caring for a loved one, at end of life.

The event in the Whistledown Hotel on Saturday 22nd March at 7pm, is free to attend, but booking is essential. Please visit EVENT BRITE link to secure your ticket.
